The Air Force Office of Scientific Research awarded a research grant to Siebel Scholar Somin Eunice Lee (UC Berkeley Bioengineering ’10). Somin was one of the 56 scientists and engineers to receive a 2016 Air Force (AFOSR) Young investigator Program (YIP) Award. Somin won for her project  “Sub-Diffraction Temperature Mapping of Protein Interconversions.”

An Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Somin’s work pushes the limits of resolution to enable new spatial and temporal capabilities needed for quantification in medicine.

The YIP is open to scientists and engineers at research institutions across the United States who received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last five years and who show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research.

The objective of this program is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering, enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators, and increase opportunities for the young investigators to recognize the Air Force mission and the related challenges in science and engineering.

In 2015 Lee was awarded an NSF CAREER award for her research project, “Engineering Plasmonic Nanoantenna Architectures for Efficient Nuclear Delivery.”
