Andrés Aranda-Díaz is a PhD student in Bioengineering. Andrés received his bachelor’s degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. During his undergrad, he worked at the Fundación Ciencia y Vida investigating the role of the Unfolded Protein Response on cancer. After graduating, he joined Hana El-Samad’s group at UCSF, where he developed tools to interrogate transcriptional regulation in yeast. At Stanford, as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Student Research Fellow and as a BioX Bowes Fellow, he is investigating how antibiotics affect the gut microbiome. Specifically, he is interested in understanding how bacteria interact with each other to change their responses to antibiotic treatments. Andrés is also a graduate consultant with the office of the Vice Provost of Teaching and Learning, through which he helps TAs around campus to improve their teaching practices. As a TA mentor, he received the special Recognition in Teaching Award from the Bioengineering department.
Liesbet currently runs an independent advisory firm that provides consulting and investment advisory services to foundations and international donor organizations with regards to the strategic development and investment management aspects of their international development activities. The firm aims to introduce and apply key business concepts, fund utilization efficiency and financial transparency from the private equity industry and private sector into the field of international development without jeopardizing the social objectives and impact of international philanthropy. Previously, Liesbet worked at the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank, as an Investment Officer for its Grassroots Business Initiative (GBI). At GBI, she was responsible for GBI's West Africa Program, assisting micro enterprise development projects in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Nigeria. She also assisted GBI's clients in Cambodia, India, and Nepal on developing income generating activities for survivors of human trafficking.
Riccardo Paccagnella is a PhD student in computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Advised by Prof. Chris Fletcher, his current research focuses on systems and hardware security. Riccardo obtained his Bachelor's degree in computer engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
Rong received her PhD degree from Stanford University Biomedical Informatics Training program. Rong's Ph.D. study was specialized in biomedical Natural Language Process(NLP), information extraction, information retrieval, text mining, machine learning, semantic search and knowledge engineering. Rong has founded MedSemantics with two other fellow Stanford Graduates in 2009 at Palo Alto.
Zhendi is currently working at Barclays Global Investors in San Francisco, doing fixed income research in the context of Cash Management. She is responsible for developing and implementing quantitative models to calculate the portfolio's risk and optimize the portfolio's sector allocation based on risk-adjusted returns.
